LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS
MR. ROBOT - USA NETWORK’S GOLDEN GLOBE, EMMY AWARD-WINNING SERIES - SOUNDTRACK VOLUME 1

Original Music By Composer Mac Quayle

“Is any of it real? I mean, look at this. Look at it! A world built on fantasy. Synthetic emotions in the form of pills. Psychological warfare in the form of advertising. Mind-altering chemicals in the form of food! Brainwashing seminars in the form of media.” - Mr. Robot

MR. ROBOT follows Elliot (Rami Malek), a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader (Christian Slater) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. The series also stars Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin and Martin Wallström.

“During the first season of MR. ROBOT, we filtered a wide variety of emotions through the surreal mind of Elliot Anderson,” said executive producer Sam Esmail. “Music was the tool that allowed me to stay nimble and consistent with the show’s tone, even as we regularly pushed our main character to weirder and stranger places.”

“Elliot uses programming and social engineering techniques to seek and exploit weakness in computer networks, and I use programming and sonic engineering techniques to help enhance the emotional content of each scene,” said Quayle. “Armed with our computers and an arsenal of software tools, we both attempt to create and discover the right combination of notes (code) and sounds (keystrokes) that help tell the story (access the network).”

“For this soundtrack, the idea was to include as much music as possible from Season 1 and organize it chronologically by episode,” Quayle described. He used an almost all electronic palette for the show, adding only one organic instrument – a piano. “A signature sound in the show is created from what I call ‘PaulStretch Textures’: audio that has been manipulated by a time stretching program is converted into a sampler instrument making it playable on a keyboard.”
